History of the Mackler Historic Tour

The Mackler Historic Tour website is an outgrowth of Dr. Mackler's love and appreciation for the life he enjoyed in the city of Radford, where he lived from 1973 to 1990.

Dr. Mackler served on the Founder's Day Centennial Commission and curated the Radford Centennial Exhibit of historic photographs and artifacts at the Radford University art gallery, while living in Radford.

He edited the Radford Founder's Day Cookbook* which included many of the historic photographs. The cover of the cookbook featured a picture of Dr. John Blair Radford the founder of the city. He selected the artist and oversaw the completion and placement of the bust of Dr. Radford that sits in the courthouse today. He developed and chaired the first annual Radford New River boat race.

The idea for the historic tour was conceived by Dr. Mackler while serving on the Commission and was developed over the years as he researched each site, gathering information to make the tour interesting and historically correct.

The Mackler Historic Tour of Radford Virginia website was created for the people of Radford as a small token of appreciation for all Radford has given him including the many friendships made and the joy of raising his children in this wonderful nurturing community
